The evening

When does the card come?

At your household's card time, on your cooking days: 17:30 unless you change it. The night closes at the cutoff, which is 20:00 unless you change it. Both are in Settings › Tonight's card.

Answering it

Tap yes or no on the notification, on the Live Activity on your lock screen, or in the app. If the meal doesn't appeal, say what you fancy and Half Five offers something else.

One yes settles tonight. If your household has chosen Both agree (Settings › Who decides), a second adult's yes settles it.

A night off, or a week away

  • Choose the days you cook in Settings › Cooking days.
  • If you're away, use Settings › Pause for a week. No cards come while you're paused, and your meals stay as they are.

Not getting the card

Check iOS Settings › Half Five › Notifications and turn on Allow Notifications. For the lock-screen view, check iOS Settings › Half Five › Live Activities. With notifications off, tonight's card still waits in the app.

Names on the lock screen

Off unless you turn it on, in Settings › Names on the lock screen. When it's on, the card can say who chose dinner.

Your household

Invite someone

Go to Settings › Household › Invite someone and send them the link. They open it on their iPhone and sign in, and they're in your household with your meals already there.

If they don't have Half Five yet, the link shows them where to get it. Once it's installed, they tap the link again.

Add a child

Go to Settings › Household › Add a child. Children don't need the app. With a child in the household, Half Five can keep leftovers for them.

Allergies

Half Five leaves out new recipes from its library that list what your household avoids. It doesn't check your own meals, because nobody has recorded what's in them. It asks for your explicit consent before you choose any allergens, because that's health information. You can say no and keep using Half Five; it just won't filter for you.

To choose or change what your household avoids, go to Settings › Allergens. To erase all of it at once, tap Turn off allergens there: that withdraws your consent and deletes the household's allergen list, from your phone and from your household's record on our servers. It doesn't change anything else.

The filter is a convenience, not a safety system. Always read the actual ingredients and the actual packaging before you cook and before you serve.

Remove someone, or leave

  • To remove someone, tap them in Settings › Household and choose Remove from the household.
  • To leave, use Settings › Leave the household. The meals stay with everyone else, and you start again with a household of your own.

The subscription

What's free

The evening is always free: tonight's card, answering it, choosing from your own meals, marking what you cooked, and leftovers. A free household can keep up to 15 meals.

The subscription adds:

  • more meals;
  • "Something new" from our recipe library;
  • reading recipes from photos, text and links;
  • the shopping list.

Cancel or change it

Go to Settings › Subscription › Manage subscription in Half Five, or iOS Settings › Apple Account › Subscriptions. Apple handles the billing, so we can't cancel it for you.

What happens when it ends

Your household keeps every meal it has, and the evening carries on as normal. You just can't go above 15 active meals until someone subscribes again.

Get a refund

Apple handles refunds, at reportaproblem.apple.com.

Restore a purchase on a new phone

Sign in to the App Store with the same Apple Account, then tap Settings › Subscription › Restore a purchase in Half Five.

Does everyone need their own subscription?

No. One subscription covers everyone in the household, and Family Sharing is on for your Apple family.

Your data

  • Take a copy: Settings › Your data › Export my data, then share or save the file.
  • Delete your account: Settings › Your data › Delete account and data. If no other adult is left in your household, the household and everything in it goes too. It doesn't cancel an Apple subscription.
  • Withdraw allergen consent: in Settings. It erases every avoided food in your household straight away, and it doesn't touch anything else.
  • What we hold and why is in the privacy policy. For anything about your data, write to data@halffive.app.

Allergen labels on our recipes

Recipes in "Something new" show allergen labels taken from their ingredients and checked by a person. They describe the recipe, not anyone in your household, and they're separate from your household's own allergen list.

Like the filter, they're a help and not a safety system. Ingredients change, brands change and products get reformulated, so always read the actual ingredients and the actual packaging before you cook and before you serve. Half Five gives no dietary, nutritional or medical advice.
